#Chapter6

Hope's POV

I was awoken by the radiant sun rays hitting my face. I grumbled due to the sudden brightness on my closed eyes and turned over onto my side. If only it were Friday.

It was Wednesday and I had two more days to go. The moment I was about to enter the abyss, the annoying sound of my alarm blared into my ears. I stuffed my face into my pillow and sighed. Opening my eyes, I looked for my phone and turned off the alarm.

Stretching, I got out of bed and went into the bathroom.

After doing my morning routine I exited the bathroom. I opened the windows and felt the cold breeze brush against my cheek.

It's going to be a cold day, I thought.

Walking to my tiny wardrobe, I pulled out a thin black old turtleneck sweater and a pair of plaid cream and black colored pants that I had worn multiple times. I took my undergarments next, and entered the bathroom.

Changing into those clothes, I went downstairs and decided to make some reasonable pancakes for myself.

Luckily I found some leftover material to make them. Since I wouldn't have a big appetite in the morning. I only ate two of my not-so-good pancakes. Afterwards I left for school.

The walk was short, and soon I saw the school building come into my sight, my eyes roamed over the grounds which were full of students today. Some were rushing into the building, while others were lurking around in the parking lot. Almost everyone was busy talking to someone whereas I was alone.

Hurrying inside, I made my way to my locker, I opened it and began to collect my books.

Suddenly I felt a presence behind me. I really hoped it wasn't Heath. He had said what he wanted to say yesterday then why was he here again? It wasn't like I was deaf and needed to hear the same thing again and again. His fiery eyes and the fierce look on the face were enough to make me run to the hills.

Slowly, I turned around and was met with the sight of a young girl who looked cute in her pink hoodie which had a white rabbit printed in the middle. She had a round face with chubby cheeks, and her silky golden hair was tied in a high ponytail above her head.

"Hi," I said, and lightly smiled at her, although a lot of thoughts were orbiting around in my mind.

What is she doing here? Is she here to threaten me like Heath? What if she has a crush on him and is here to tell me to stay away?

Staring at her I realized that she didn't look like a threatening type. No one really talked to me unless they wanted something. It was mostly notes or homework.

"Hello, I'm Marie. Mr. Carlie sent me to you. He told me that you could help me with the test that's coming up this Monday," She said sweetly, while tightly gripping the books in her hands.

Told you so, my mind taunted.

"Uhm, yeah sure." I looked away from her for a second as it felt awkward talking to a stranger.

"Meet me in the library second period tomorrow, if you have it free. I can help you out then." I suggested and she passed me a charming smile before bobbing her head up and down and walking away.

I had never seen her before in school. Maybe because I never noticed anyone. I just paid attention to books or sometimes to my doodling but not humans. Shaking my head, I locked my locker and started walking to my first class which was Maths.

I stepped into the Math class and took a seat at the back as usual. After five minutes Heath entered the class.

Why was he attending school all of a sudden? He hardly ever attended one.

Or maybe he did and you never noticed until now, my subconscious spoke. I couldn't agree more. It was just recently that I had started acknowledging his presence. Earlier I wouldn't even look in his direction. He seemed like trouble and that was the last thing I wanted in life.

Just a year ago, I had started to feel relieved as mom and I were safe and nothing was gonna happen to her. Just a year back, I had begun to live in a silent house which was way better than a house where at every hour of the day loud noisy bickering was echoing and things were breaking.

I don't know how I survived through that period of time. I remember how I would shudder when dad would break something or when he would talk so loud that sometimes I would flinch because of his tone. It had become so hard. And even now, the past was chasing me.

Heath searched for empty seats. Unluckily, the only seat vacant was the one to my left.

Why can't there be more chairs in the room? I mentally face-palmed myself.

Heath strode over, and took the seat to my left, and I impulsively moved away from him. The last thing I wanted was for him to catch me staring at him.

Soon Miss Sheila came and began to ramble on the trigonometry Chapter that we had started yesterday. But I hardly heard a word. Throughout the lecture, I tried to stay focused, but I just couldn't concentrate on anything. Heath was throwing me the occasional glare, but I didn't look at him.

Glaring, that's all he knows. He can't even look at someone without threatening them, I thought.

When the bell rang I heaved out a sigh of relief and hurriedly got out of the class.

I had a spare period and then I had a English Literature class. I loved the subject but resented David Santiago who was in that class with me.

David was the jock of the school, the biggest player, and the most arrogant person you would ever meet in your lifetime. He was a total flirt amongst the girls. With the looks and charismatic personality, every girl was down for him.

He had a sturdy body and stood at 6 ft 1 tall height. Having sharp features was another plus point to his personality. Also he had this tan body that made girls swoon. Not me.

David and I had been studying together since middle school, but he never once said a word to me. Just a week ago, he started getting really friendly with me and always took the nearest seat to me so he could talk to me. He would initiate the conversation and throw in a joke or two here and there and that would make me laugh.

At first, I didn't understand his odd behavior - I mean, out of the blue he noticed me and was now trying to befriend me. What was his ulterior motive?
