#Chapter10

Cautiously I extended my hands towards his large thick hands asking for his permission. He looked at me and rolled his eyes but let me grab his hands this time. They were so warm and his skin felt rough to touch. I sucked in some air and then grabbed some cotton.

"How did you know what happened?" I whispered and he looked at me. Gently and slowly, I began to clean his blood-filled fingers with cotton. His knuckles were scraped and looked like he had never taken care of them.

"I saw you and him in the library," He said in a dry tone and I looked up to meet his gaze.

Oh my Gosh. He had watched how David pushed me, and how I was crying on the floor. He had watched it all, and I didn't know what to feel. I didn't know if he had heard our conversation too because it would be a disaster if he had heard it. I wouldn't even look at him if he had listened to everything David said to me.

"Did-did you hear anything?" I asked.

"No. I saw you on the floor crying and David coming out of your direction. He left before I could beat him there in front of you." He stared and my heart did something weird in my chest.

"You didn't have to though." I reasoned and he narrowed his eyes at me.

"Yeah sure." He said sarcastically.

A layer of embarrassment coated my cheeks in the form of red color and I looked away from Heath.

After cleaning I applied pyodine to them. He quietly hissed in pain and I mumbled a sorry. I leaned down towards his fingers and blew some air on them in hope of easing the pain. Then I wrapped his hands in the gauze.

Heath never once tore his eyes away from my face. I felt his burning gaze on me all the time. It was so difficult to concentrate on his hands when his eyes were watching my every move like a predator watching its prey.

I looked at him once, and my breath hitched as I realized how close our faces were and how both of us were drowned in each other's eyes. It was strange as to how we always stared at each other.

My cheeks burned further and I instantly focused back on his hands. I tied the gauze in a knot and pulled my hands away.

"All set. Your hands will be good as new in no time," I said to him in a cheery voice. He cleared his throat and looked away.

"You didn't have to do it," Heath grumpily said to me but it was enough to make my day.

"You're welcome, and I had to do it. This is my way of paying you back," I added a smile.

Heath's eyes fell on me and he gazed at me for a while. At once they moved over to my cheek. His jaw tightened and he closed his eyes.

When he opened them his eyes looked intense. He lifted his hand and tried to touch my cheek on which I had hit the table.

I pulled back from him instinctively. His hands curled into fists and his eyes at once changed. You could visibly see the black pupil dilate.

He glared at me and then got up. He walked out of the room without glancing back.

That was strange.

--------------

The next day I had to go to school even though I was having really bad cramps. Periods and their stupid painful cramps, ugh!

The pain was unbearable. I had to take two painkillers and the pain subsided only by a fraction.

It was difficult to walk to school in the morning but thankfully I made it there. Looking around I didn't see Heath's car.

Why are you searching for his car? My mind asked. Groaning at my silly thoughts, I went to my locker.

I was here only because I told Marie that I would tutor her today. She needed my help and the test was just a few days away so I had to help her out.

After what felt like ages, the first class ended. By then I felt a lot better but the constant pain was there.

Walking into the library, yesterday's incident played in my mind. I felt a feeling of deja vu. I tried to not think about it and chose a spot near the entrance and close to the librarian. In case something like that would happen again at least I would be able to notify others to help me or run away.

Sitting down I opened my chemistry book and reviewed all the points. After fifteen minutes Marie came and took a seat across from me.

She was smiling from ear to ear. She was wearing a blue leather jacket with a friends t-shirt underneath it.

I loved the Friends show.

"Hey, Hope. How are you?" she whispered with a cheeky smile. I was a little surprised by her behavior. No one had asked me that in a long time.

"Uhm. .. hi I'm good. How about you?" This conversation felt good. For once I was interacting with someone besides Lily.

"Oh, I'm great. You know why? Because my boyfriend just surprised me this morning with flowers. Let me tell you what flowers they were. There were fresh, bright red tulips with white tulips. The color combination looked amazing. They were plucked in the morning so they looked refreshing and beautiful. And oh my God the smell of them was just amazing. I'm so happy Seb decided to sur-" her hands were moving into the air and she knocked down her water bottle on the table. Fortunately it was tightly sealed so the water didn't sleep out.

"You okay?" I asked worriedly, as she had hit her hand pretty hard.

"Yes I'm fine." She assured me as she held her hand.

"Let's get into chemistry. What topic are you having trouble with?" I asked as I opened the book.

"The ester topic in organic chemistry. It seems confusing to me. Can you explain it to me?"

Marie nodded her head understandingly and opened her books. In no time we started studying. Time passed and I learned that she was really good. She just needed help with numerical. I tried my best to teach her the easiest way possible. We practiced different questions and she got all of them correct except a few.

Marie was doing the last question when the bell rang and we both groaned. I was having fun teaching her. Other than her rambling she was really witty. Always trying to make jokes here and there. And she was talkative too.

We both stood up and put our books in our bags. Just when I was going to exit the library. She caught my hand and pulled me back. I quickly shook my hand to get it out of her hold.

"Hope, thanks for doing this. I hope I pass this test with flying colors, the concepts are clear now. Thank you!" She hugged me tightly unexpectedly and I stood stationary. After a few seconds, I hugged her back. No stranger had hugged me before so it felt a bit strange when she embraced me.

"Are you okay now? I heard what happened yesterday. I'm sorry you had to go through that," she squeezed my shoulder and passed me a sympathetic smile.

"It's okay. Bad things happen in life," I mumbled. Marie smiled weakly.

At once her eyes lit up with happiness and she looked at me.

"Can you be my girl-friend? I have a boyfriend and a male friend but not a female friend. So can we be friends? I hope I didn't sound like Justin Bieber. It's just that I don't like him anymore. Anyway, back to the main topic. You have to say yes. I won't take no for an answer. You are all I have been looking for in a friend. You don't think I'm weird. Your face shows you like being in my company. Also my rambling doesn't bother you so much that you have to snap at me. We both will have so much fun. Think about the late-night sleepovers and hours of shopping. I never got a chance to do them with anyone. So Hope tell me you'll say yes. If you won't I'l-"

"Okay," I said with a genuine grin.

"Yes, yes, yes!" She said and pulled me in a hug again. I guess she loved giving hugs.

"Gimme your phone number so I can text you." I smiled and handed her my phone. She saved her number under the name 'Marie'

"There you go. Text me so I'll get yours in return," I nodded. We both walked out of the Library.

I went to Physics which was my next class and she went to computer science.

I didn't see Marie during lunch. I sat at my usual table and ate my food quietly.

David was also absent. Considering the amount of damage Heath had done, I was sure he would be in the hospital for a couple of days.

After hours of long classes and boring lectures, the school day ended and I went back home.

Thinking about my day I somewhat felt content that I didn't decide to not go to school. I made a friend which was good. Lily would be over the moon. It was surreal that now I had a friend when I had been alone for months.

Smiling widely, I entered home and did some chores. The whole day passed by me doing the laundry and cleaning the house.

At night I contemplated calling Lily but it was late and I was worn out so I didn't. The moment I laid on my bed, sleep overtook me.
